Five Profitable Business ideas to start in Kenya

Self-employment is one of the things everyone who wants freedom strives for. When you have your own business, it is easy to have time for self-development. If you have been employed, especially in an environment that you don’t find conducive to work at, then you know what am talking about when I say freedom. Starting your own business could mean nothing less than flexibility. You are your own boss. No one will call you and assign you tasks at the time you are concentrating on personal things.

However, starting a business becomes a headache when coming up with a unique idea and finding reliable customers. Here, we are going to talk about five ideas that you can start up with little capital in Kenya. First of all, thing about what you are passionate in and find a unique niche. Sometimes it doesn’t necessarily have to be unique, but you can still do what has been done by other people, but think of adding something new on top. Competition is allowed in the business world.

These are some of the simplest ideas to start;

  1. Selling Snacks

Who doesn’t enjoy eating street foods? Talk about boiled eggs, smokies, mutura (Kenyan sausage) and the rest. Such a business needs a strategic position with little capital and with good service, you will see your customers increase. You don’t need to rent an expensive store. You can purchase a small vending cart and set it up by the road side where people pass by when going to work or even near a learning institution. Make sure that at that location, you won’t find yourself in the hands of the authorities.

If you want just a small scale business, you only need as little as Ksh10, 000. In your menu, include samosas, chapatis, boiled eggs, and kebab. Remember that Kenyans like it when you add kachumbari on top. Do not charge the kachumbari. Think of the profit you will make from a packet of sausages that has 22 pieces and a tray of 30 eggs. In a day, those in the snack businesses have recorded profits of Ksh800 on a bad day.

2. Cake business

Even though the pandemic has affected congregations that saw weddings and other gatherings banned, people have not stopped consuming cakes. Birthday parties will remain to be celebrated even with a group of ten people. You can start making cakes and advertise them online, where people can see. Remember to make it an order and delivery business. Online presence is essential. Customize your cakes to meet what the customer wants and ensure quality is met. Also, look at what your competitors’ prices are and even offer discounts so that you attract customers.

Start the business and even if you don’t attract customers during your first month, keep doing it.

3. Photography

Well, everyone has their luck. If you offer quality services and be unique, you can earn some good money. Go get a good camera from a good brand like Canon or Nikon. Get into nature or street photography. With this photos, find online brands that can buy them. But the most demanded one is studio photography where you work with models and celebrities. Set affordable prices and you will see your business grow.

Have you ever thought of a business whereby you can be awarded a tender to clean offices? Yes, it is a lucrative business. Start your own company, buy the necessary equipment like vacuum cleaners and recruit man power since you can’t do the job all alone. You need employees depending on the size of the company. Once, you have that in place, look for tenders and keep on sending your application. Target all organizations regardless of whether it is big or small. I will talking about how to start this business in my next episode and all that is required.

Although people nowadays have computers at home, not many will purchase printers and photocopiers for home use. People will still look for printing and photocopying services. What you need is furniture, license, computer, Internet connection, printers and also a perfect location. I would suggest you set this business near a learning institution. Students will always want to type and print their assignments. Therefore, you will have ready customers. Also, include other services like scanning, photography for passports, and online registration. However, remember competition will always be high, so look for a location where competition is little.
